benzos and benadryl

I take Melatonin and Ativan at night to help with sleep. It's spring and I have allergies. Does anyone know whether or not it would be safe for me to add a couple of Benadryl into the mix tonight?

I think it would be okay, though it might make you really sleepy.

I took benadryl with xanax once a few weeks ago and I slept like a rock for more than 10 hours straight. I also had terrible, vivid nightmares. I'm hypersensitive to benadryl, though, so you may react differently.

How does melatonin work for you? I've tried valerian root and melatonin, and they really did not do anything to help me sleep. Valerian root just made my arms feel tired, and when I took melatonin I would stay up all night anyway. I've since been prescribed Ambien, which everyone I know seems to think is a Very Bad Idea, but honestly I've gotten amazing sleep since starting it. I'm really interested to know how some of the OTC and herbal sleep aids work with other people.

Well, I've been taking Melatonin for about 6 years now. It helped with sleep A LOT when I first started taking it, but I'm doubting that it could possibly be doing much for me by this point.

you think you are sleeping... think being the keyword. When I was on ambien there were times that I went to bed, just to be told the next day that I was up all night walking around, eating food. It was horrifying for me.

any pharmacist would have a really good idea of if or how benadryl, ativan, and melatonin could possibly interact with each other. they go to school to learn about the drugs and their interactions.

I'd call a pharmacist just to be sure.

Benadryl always makes me so sleepy, and adding melatonin and antivan to it might make you even sleepier.

First, I would say calling a pharmacist is the best route. However, I have taken Klonopin with Benadryl and been fine, just more sleepy. I would say skip the melatonin or, even better, get something like Claritin (brand name Loratadine) which works is still an antihistamine but doesn't cause drowsiness. I have to take that every day mixed with my Klonopin for allergies almost year round (I get to take a break for 3 months of summer). Benedryl *I think* is faster acting but Claritin stays in your system longer and the latter probably only takes like 30 minutes to get into your system.
